Academic Research Commercialization (ARC) Program

students presenting

ARC is a workshop series that introduces participating students to the different facets of scientific commercialization. Driven by insights shared by invited guest speakers, students learn how science is translated from the bench to the marketplace. Students also participate in the process of scientific commercialization by identifying faculty research with commercial potential and completing a commercialization project that helps faculty discover pathways for commercializing their discoveries.

Program Components

  • In-person Sessions:  Students will hear from faculty and practitioners during live sessions that meet weekly in the spring term. Guest speakers will provide topical overviews of various facets of scientific commercialization, such as intellectual property, market analysis and validation, business development, and more.
  • Faculty Engagement: Students will identify a Yale faculty member whose research has commercial potential and work with that faculty to discover insights about the best path to commercializing their research.
  • Project: Students will be equipped to complete a “commercialization sprint,” which is a short-term project where they analyze faculty research for patentable inventions and commercial applications and analyze the market to identify potential customers and licensees.

Selection Criteria

Tsai CITY seeks currently enrolled undergraduate as well as graduate and professional school students who are curious about how to translate basic science into the marketplace. Students whose majors and programs of study intersect with a STEM field are encouraged to apply. No prior experience with scientific commercialization is required.

To participate, students will have to commit to attending 5 in-person sessions at Tsai CITY and to meeting periodically with a member of Yale’s faculty throughout the spring semester. In addition to time spent in the live sessions, students can expect to spend a maximum of 5 hours per week on their projects and on pre-session preparation. Students will be responsible for coordinating meeting times with faculty periodically throughout the term. Tsai CITY staff will be available to support students. Visit the ARC Notion page here to get a more detailed look at what the program entails.
